Sports Massage

Sports massage is a form of massage which focuses on muscle systems used in sporting activity. Not necessarily a 'massage' it uses specific techniques to treat areas of the body where injury and muscle imbalance have occurred. It is also seen as an essential part of a long term training program where competition preparation and injury prevention are required and can be tailored to individual needs. It is available to everyone from elite athletes to average club players, and hair dressers to ballet dancers.

With ever more people taking part in sporting activity and their increasing competitiveness and intensity of physical endeavor, sports massage is seen as an essential tool to aid and improve physical performance. Used regularly it can be deeply relaxing employing Swedish massage techniques which can help athletes prevent injuries which may otherwise be caused by overuse.

My role as sports masseur to Walcot rugby rfc and Somerset under 20's rugby team is to help players prepare for matches using warm up techniques and stretches as well as helping with strapping and taping. During training sessions I help players with injuries using sports massage techniques and showing them how to best recover using specific exercises and self stretches.

It can be quite uncomfortable initially until the body acclimatizes, but administered skillfully, it is the most effective therapy for releasing muscle tension and restoring balance to the musculo-skeletal system, and helping people maintain a much healthier physical state.
